Hull, at one point, was the largest port in the world, the town was surrounded by docks, and the Humber Estuary had had about 20 miles of docks, berths, wharfs and landing points. The town itself prospered on whales as they had very little waste, fats for example could be used to waterproof boats, burnt as lighting, and boiled to make paints and varnish! The amount of businesses that arose from the whaling trade was amazing, and even after the trade declined in the 1840's the fishing trade boomed once again! Hull today is very different, many of the docks have been filled in and play host to housing, recreation, and shopping centres!

My family have very close links to the Fishing industry in Hull, almost all my family from the past come from a place called Hessle road, i am also sure that the link stretches way back to the Whaling days of Hull, i will do some asking on this and post. angela

Hessle Road was the fishing epicentre of Hull. The road dates back to the medievel period when it was a toll road from Hull to Hessle, hence the name, and it entered the City at Hessle Gate used to stand, which is now next to the Marina at Humber-street. During the 1800's when Hull was expanding outwards towards the smaller parishes, Anlaby-road and Hessle-road were created. With the creation of the docks in the west of the city, it was a place for fisherfolk to live, and be close to their work. Initially plans were in place to ferry the workers from the town centre, but this proved too costly. You should have a look at a website called Hull Trawler.net. It has all the fishing vessels on from the 1800's to the modern side winders.

| Hello Mike, Nothing to do with Hull here, but i live in Japan, not far from a port where the Japanese whaling fleet sits, i disagree with whaling, i am no animal activist but its so cruel, there is a lot of controversy about the Japan whaling, we have greenpeace in the harbour most of the time. | Hi Serenna. We no longer have a whaling fleet, it ceased in the 1800's when less and less whales were caught. It was a way of life for the residents of Hull, and it's loss hit the community hard, but luckily the fishing trade took off. We don't really have any such trades now, the docks are bare and hardly used, and it's sad to look at how busy it was. In the past it was said that the boats were so tightly packed in the docks, you could walk across the water and never get your feet wet! |

Well, living in a quite remote part of Alaska you have to do what you need to do to survive, there are time when we have to live of the land and sea, i dont mean Whales by the way, but its worth remembering that there was once a time when very few Whales were safe, as Mike has said about Hull and its past, i must admit Mike, i was supprised to hear that Hull was the largest whaling fleet in the world, thing is, its cruel facts of life, i dont agree with whales being hunted, and i certainly do not agree with the cruel way in whichn it is done, but for me i have grown use to ther harsh facts of life being as were i am from. greylady

I guess it was a way of life for them back in the 17 and early 1800's. I am shocked to see it still happening today in such places as Japan.
